For her exhibition at Jealous, Jessica will be further exploring the idea of the meadow; how it is symbolic to us as a place of peace and serenity, and where life is played out in all its beauty and brutality. She will be showing her second short film/installation with sounds by Nick Powell (musician, composer and sound designer). It will include live footage and sound recordings taken from the meadow that Jessica has been developing in Devon for the last 3 years.
This project began not only as place to research the life that grows there, but also to support the conservation of the area - for two species of bee in particular: The Shrill Carder and the Bilberry Bumblebee. Jessica has worked alongside the BBCT (Bumblebee ConservaCon Trust) to raise awareness for the plight of the bee through her work for many years.
Alongside the film she will be showing work which plays with the idea of surface and layers, using honey and glass, as well as her drawings - for which she is best known.
Jessica will also be releasing a brand new print edition with Jealous as part of her exhibition. 'Baby Rabbit' is an Archival Inkjet Print with a 1 Colour Screenprint Overlay on Somerset Satin Enhance 330gsm Paper, with Deckled Edges, and an Edition of 100.
Join us for the Private View party on Thursday 10th May at Jealous East, from 6.30 -8.30pm. All welcome!!
Jessica Albarn works with nature, exploring how we as human beings project onto and identify with the natural world; a relationship that in our modern times has become increasingly dislocated and disconnected.
She is known for her fine line drawings, not only on paper, but also on glass and wax.
Jessica has exhibited extensively and created two books; ‘Bee-headed’ and ‘The Boy in the Oak’ , a dark fairytale which she wrote and illustrated. The latter of which was also made into a short film.
Her collabortions include Helmut Lang NYC for their ‘Spiderling' collection, which saw her take her spiders to Tokyo for a 3 day live drawing event. More recently she made her first stop motion film 'Creation’, collaborating with Nick Powell and Sarah Willson (of the band Oskar).
Devoted to the bee, Jessica has used her work to raise awareness and pay homage to their plight. She is currently developing a meadow in Devon to support the bees and local wildlife of the area, and as a space to create and explore ideas, while gathering research.
